WASHINGTON – On Monday, President Donald Trump announced that he was placing law enforcement in the nation’s capital under federal control, along with deploying National Guard troops. These are exceptional measures for a city he claims has been “invaded by violent gangs.”
This announcement comes in defiance of official statistics that show a decline in violent crime in Washington, D.C. Trump asserted that he was invoking a measure that authorizes him to take control of the police in this uniquely situated U.S. city.
“It has become a situation of complete and total anarchy, and we are going to get rid of the shantytowns,” Trump stated during a press conference at the White House. This followed a post on his Truth Social platform the previous day, in which he ordered Washington’s homeless population to leave the city and “go far away.”
The Republican president also declared a state of emergency in Washington, hinting that his initiative would not stop there.
“It will go further. We are starting very strongly in (Washington) and we are going to clean it up very quickly,” he declared.
Trump also announced the deployment of the National Guard, a reserve military force, “in order to restore law, order, and public safety.”
This is not the first time Trump has used the National Guard in this manner. Last June, he mobilized the guard in California, against the wishes of the state’s Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom. At the time, he claimed he wanted to restore order in Los Angeles following protests against arrests made by the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Unlike the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia operates under a special relationship with the federal government that limits its autonomy. This unique status gives the federal government broader authority to intervene in the city’s affairs.
These measures are part of Trump’s hardline approach to domestic security, which appears set to continue in the coming period. This is despite criticism from experts and political opponents who view the actions as an abuse of power and a misrepresentation of the actual security situation in the nation’s capital.
