In a notable diplomatic stance carrying deep political messages, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, during his official visit to Algeria, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Kingdom of Morocco for its pivotal role in establishing the “National Reconciliation Document” known as the Taif Agreement, which ended the Lebanese civil war in 1989.

During a joint press conference with his Algerian counterpart, Aoun also praised Saudi Arabia for its role in this agreement, which was the cornerstone for restoring stability and peace in Lebanon.

He emphasized Lebanon’s stance of non-interference in the internal affairs of brotherly countries, noting that Lebanon is committed to support and cooperation for the common good of all — a statement interpreted by analysts as carrying nuanced diplomatic undertones, especially given the timing and location of the declaration.

Observers widely noted Aoun’s words as a clear expression of loyalty and appreciation for Morocco’s efforts in supporting Lebanese stability, sending a particularly meaningful signal amid the sensitive regional and political climate and the ongoing tension between Rabat and Algiers.

The Taif Agreement, reached in 1989, is regarded as a historic turning point in Lebanon’s history, ending years of civil war and laying the foundation for national reconciliation, with notable support from Morocco and Saudi Arabia.

This scene and declaration at the heart of the Algerian capital, before its highest official authorities, affirms that Morocco’s role in regional stability remains respected and appreciated, sending important political and diplomatic messages amid shifting regional dynamics.
