The conference, organized by the National Agency for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in partnership with several national and international institutions, was held on May 12th and 13th at the Palais des Congrès hotel in Fez, under the theme: “From Extract to Active Ingredient.”

Bendou highlighted that Ibn Zohr University’s location, spanning five major regions of the Kingdom considered natural reserves rich in high-value medicinal and aromatic plants, provides it with a distinguished position to be a leading academic and scientific actor in valorizing these natural resources. He stressed that this unique geographical positioning enables the university to play a pivotal role in scientific research, training, and the transfer of specialized knowledge towards serving sustainable development in this sector.

The President of Ibn Zohr University revealed the university’s current development of eight qualitative research projects in the field of medicinal and aromatic plants. He noted that these projects, carried out within a tripartite partnership involving the National Agency for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research, and Ibn Zohr University, have a total funding of 4.5 million dirhams. These research initiatives aim to support innovation and develop natural products with promising therapeutic, cosmetic, and industrial applications.

This important event also provided an opportunity to strengthen fruitful partnerships between university institutions, research centers, and the pharmaceutical and natural product industries, with the aim of establishing a sustainable system for valorizing this promising sector with significant potential.

The conference concluded with the issuance of a set of important recommendations that emphasized the need to strengthen effective coordination between various actors in the sector, provide the necessary support for applied scientific research, and develop a flexible legal framework that encourages innovation and optimal investment in the field of medicinal and aromatic plants, thereby serving the Kingdom’s sustainable economic and social development.
