Hilale: United States Determined to End Sahara Dispute Finally, 50th Green March Anniversary Could Mark Resolution

New York: Omar Hilale, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has affirmed in his statements the “firm determination” shown by the United States of America, under its previous administration, to definitively resolve the Moroccan Sahara dispute.

In his remarks, Hilale indicated a “strong possibility” that the Kingdom of Morocco could celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Green March with an end to this protracted conflict, based on recent developments and the “clear and increasingly supportive” American positions on this issue.

These statements come amidst the intensive diplomatic efforts undertaken by Morocco to resolve the Sahara issue and in light of the growing American support for the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco as a realistic and credible solution to this regional dispute.

It is worth recalling that the previous US administration recognized Morocco’s full sovereignty over the Sahara in December 2020, a decision that Morocco considered “historic” and a “fundamental shift” in the United States’ position on this conflict. Rabat hopes for the continuation and activation of this support in a way that contributes to achieving a final and sustainable resolution to the Sahara issue.
