How to Improve Communication Skills to Boost Employment Opportunities in Morocco

In light of the rapid transformations taking place in Morocco’s job market, communication skills have become one of the core competencies sought by employers. International reports highlight that the ability to express ideas clearly, actively listen, negotiate, and work in teams plays a vital role in enhancing employability, especially among recent graduates.

According to the World Economic Forum’s 2023 “Future of Jobs” report, communication ranks among the top 10 most in-demand skills in the global job market, alongside critical thinking, adaptability, and problem-solving. The report emphasizes that soft skills are gaining increasing importance—often outweighing academic qualifications.

The Moroccan Job Market and Employment Challenges

In Morocco, many young job seekers face a gap between academic training and market demands. Data from the High Commission for Planning (HCP) shows that youth unemployment among those aged 15 to 24 stands at around 32%, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen personal capabilities—especially communication skills.

According to Abderrahim Naciri, an expert in human development and career training, “Technical skills alone are no longer enough to secure employment. Many recruiters place communication abilities at the top of their hiring criteria, especially in the service and commercial sectors.”

How to Develop Your Communication Skills

The International Labour Organization (ILO) recommends several practical steps for young people looking to enhance their communication abilities:

  • Enroll in verbal and written communication courses through free online platforms like Coursera and edX.
  • Participate in community activities or volunteering initiatives, which offer real-life settings to practice teamwork and communication.
  • Train for job interviews through mock sessions, improving body language, tone of voice, and confidence.
  • Improve foreign language proficiency, especially French and English, as they are key tools for communication in both the Moroccan and international labor markets.

Moroccan Initiatives Supporting Soft Skills

In recent years, Morocco has launched several initiatives to support youth employability, including the “Intilaka” and “Forsa” programs, along with private sector projects that focus on soft skill development. Some universities have also partnered with international organizations to provide workshops in communication, public speaking, and discourse analysis.

According to Meryem El Alaoui, a career advisor at a national employment agency, “Young people who demonstrate strong communication skills and can convincingly present themselves to employers usually have a higher chance of succeeding in job interviews.”
