Rabat: High-Level Talks Between Moroccan and French Interior Ministers to Strengthen Security Cooperation and Address Migration Issues

On Monday, Moroccan Minister of the Interior Abdelouafi Laftit hosted French Minister of State and Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin in the capital, Rabat, for an official working visit aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The meeting was attended by senior officials from both sides.

According to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior, the two ministers discussed key issues of mutual interest, particularly in the areas of security and migration. They emphasized their shared perspectives on regional and international challenges, in line with the enhanced strategic partnership agreement signed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and French President Emmanuel Macron during the latter’s state visit to Morocco in October 2024.

Security and migration were the central topics of discussion, as they are foundational pillars of the bilateral relationship, especially with France reaffirming its steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

In this context, Minister Laftit proposed the establishment of a new, comprehensive cooperation framework between the interior ministries of both countries. This framework would be based on structured agreements aimed at elevating cooperation to meet the aspirations of both parties, with a focus on approving a joint roadmap between Morocco and France.

On the security front, the two ministers praised the level of coordination and cooperation between their respective security agencies, which has led to significant successes, particularly in combating terrorism and organized crime. This has resulted in the dismantling of networks threatening the security and stability of the region.

Regarding migration, Laftit reiterated Morocco’s approach, which balances humanitarian concerns with strict management, in line with the high directives of the Moroccan monarchy. He highlighted the pivotal role of the Morocco-France Mixed Migration Group as a reference mechanism for addressing shared challenges in a practical and effective manner.

The Moroccan minister also reiterated the kingdom’s commitment to establishing a joint reference framework at both operational and communicational levels to strengthen cooperation and ensure a response to future challenges.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to broaden the scope of bilateral cooperation to include new areas, particularly in civil protection and managing major crises, reflecting the shared ambition to develop a comprehensive and dynamic strategic partnership.
