Historic Shift in Maritime Sovereignty: Morocco Takes Over Control of Its Maritime Maps from France

In a move reflecting the strong technical and military cooperation between Morocco and France, a new partnership agreement has been officially signed, transferring the responsibility for producing and distributing maritime charts of waters under Moroccan sovereignty from the French National Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (Shom) to the Royal Moroccan Navy.

The signing ceremony took place in Rabat, under the supervision of Abdelatif Loudiyi, Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of National Defense Administration, with the presence of the Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Navy and several high-ranking officers and military officials from the Kingdom.

On the French side, the event was attended by French Ambassador to Morocco Christophe Lecourtier, along with a high-level delegation led by the Director-General of the French Navy’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service, General Engineer Laurent Kerliguer.

This agreement is part of strengthening the existing partnership between the two countries and aims to empower Morocco to develop its own capabilities in the field of preparing and managing strategic maritime data, an essential tool for ensuring maritime safety and conducting various related operations.

The agreement also outlines the full transfer of technical powers related to the production and distribution of maritime charts to Moroccan authorities, further enhancing national sovereignty in this critical area.

Both parties renewed their commitment to continue bilateral cooperation through knowledge exchange and capacity building, with a particular focus on strengthening the technical and operational capabilities of the Royal Moroccan Navy.
