US State Department Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal in Western Sahara

Washington D.C.: The US State Department, in a statement released today, Tuesday, April 8, 2025, reiterated the United States’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara and its strong support for the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco, describing it as “serious, credible, and realistic.”

The statement affirmed that the United States considers Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the “sole basis for a just and lasting resolution to the conflict” surrounding the Western Sahara. The State Department emphasized that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable solution” to this issue.

The statement also recalled the urging of the US President at the time to the parties involved in the dispute to “engage in discussions without delay,” considering Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the “sole framework” for negotiating a mutually acceptable solution.

The statement indicated that the United States “will facilitate progress towards this goal,” thus reaffirming its continued role in supporting efforts to reach a political solution to this regional dispute.

This statement serves as a further confirmation of the United States’ consistent position regarding the Western Sahara issue, which was previously announced and underscores Washington’s support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a realistic and applicable solution.
