Sheikh Zayed Book Award Honors Two Moroccans in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: Two Moroccan researchers, Saïd El Aouadi and Latifa Labsir, have been announced as winners of the 19th edition of the prestigious Sheikh Zayed Book Award, organizers revealed on Tuesday.

Saïd El Aouadi was awarded in the Arts and Critical Studies category for his book “Food and Speech: Rhetorical and Cultural Excavations in the Arab Heritage,” while Latifa Labsir won in the Children’s and Young Adult Literature category for her work “Taïf Sabiba” (A Girl’s Spectrum).

In the Literature category, the prize was awarded to Hoda Barakat (Lebanon/France) for her novel “Hind au plus beau des mondes” (Hind, or the Most Beautiful Woman in the World), while in the Translation section, Italian scholar Marco Di Branco was recognized for his English translation of Paulus Orosius’s work, “Orosius.”

In the Contribution to the Development of Nations category, Emirati Professor Mohammed Bechari was honored for his book “The Right to Struggle: Perspectives on the Rights of Muslim Women.”

British researcher Andrew Peacock received the award in the Arab Culture in Other Languages category for his book “Arabic Literary Culture in Southeast Asia in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries,” while Rasheed Alkhayoun (Iraq/United Kingdom) won in the Editing of Arabic Manuscripts category for his critical edition of “Nawadir al-Nisa'” (Anecdotes of Women).

On the same occasion, renowned Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami was named the “Cultural Personality of the Year” in recognition of his work that has had a global literary impact, far beyond Japan, contributing to dialogue between cultures and civilizations.

The awards ceremony will take place on April 28th, organized by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre on the sidelines of the 34th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.

The 19th edition of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award witnessed significant participation, with over 4,000 submissions from 75 countries, including 20 Arab nations.
