On Tuesday evening, the Head of Government announced the initial outcomes of the April 2024 round of social dialogue, which kicked off the previous day in the capital, Rabat. The session was attended by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, alongside representatives from major labor unions and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM).
According to an official statement received by Fes News, this round led to significant agreements benefiting public sector employees and wage earners. Chief among them is a general salary increase of 1,000 dirhams (net), to be disbursed in two phases. Nearly one million employees are expected to benefit from the second installment this coming July.
The same source also confirmed a reduction in income tax for all wage earners. This measure is expected to provide up to 400 dirhams in monthly savings for middle-income groups, aiming to improve purchasing power.
Another key outcome of the dialogue is a 10% increase in the minimum wage across industry, commerce, and liberal professions (SMIG), as well as in agriculture (SMAG)—a move the government considers direct support for low-income groups.
The sessions witnessed strong participation from the most representative unions. Prime Minister Akhannouch held successive meetings with the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT), led by Miloudi Moukharik; the General Union of Moroccan Workers (UGTM), headed by Naam Miyara; and the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT), represented by Khalid Hoyer Alami. He also met with a delegation from CGEM led by Chakib Alj.
The dialogue also addressed other pressing issues, including accelerating the implementation of sectoral agreements and fulfilling outstanding social commitments. Additionally, it included discussions on integrating the concerns of local authority employees into the dialogue agenda, with the aim of reaching consensus-driven solutions as soon as possible.
Regarding pension reform, the government reiterated its commitment to activating the national committee in charge of this matter, in full respect of the participatory approach established in the April 2022 agreement.
According to observers, this round of dialogue reflects the government’s intent to maintain a stable social climate amid the current economic context, and to solidify dialogue as a central mechanism for addressing socially sensitive issues.
