Tragic Murder in Meknes Highlights Rising Violence During Ramadan

A tragic murder shook the Bab Jdid neighborhood in Meknes, where a man in his thirties lost his life following a violent altercation. The incident, which took place near Dar Dbagh on the afternoon of Thursday, March 20, has reignited discussions about the phenomenon of “Tarmodina” the increase in tension and aggression during Ramadan.

According to local sources, the dispute arose between the victim, a 1994-born married man residing in Sidi Baba, and the perpetrator, a scrap vendor operating in the nearby flea market, known for selling second-hand goods and items recovered from waste sorting. What started as a verbal argument quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, culminating in the attacker striking the victim with a metal object, leaving him critically injured.

Emergency services rushed the victim to Mohammed V Regional Hospital in critical condition, but he succumbed to his severe injuries. Shortly after the attack, the perpetrator voluntarily surrendered to security forces at the 13th police district in Wajh Arous. He was placed under custody pending further investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor.

This crime raises concerns about the phenomenon of “Tarmodina,” a term describing heightened aggression and irritability during Ramadan due to changes in daily habits such as fasting, withdrawal from smoking, sleep disturbances, and psychological stress. These factors make minor disputes more likely to escalate into violent confrontations, as seen in this tragic case.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked emotional reactions and has sparked renewed calls for addressing the social and psychological factors that contribute to the spread of violence.
