Minister of Higher Education, Azeddine Midaoui, has committed to reviewing the issue of university units, 34 of which were previously canceled during the tenure of former minister Abdelatif Miraoui, despite being approved during the tenure of former minister Saeed Amzazi. Midaoui assured, during his meeting with a delegation from the Taounate Competencies Forum, that he would give special attention to the six originally approved university units, including the Taounate branch.
The forum, which includes members of parliament, former ministers, university professors, and media figures, presented to the minister the details of the Taounate College project, which had been frozen previously, as well as the issue of the insufficient number of scholarships allocated to students from the region.
Idris Al-Wali, head of the forum, explained that the establishment of a university in Taounate was planned in the finance laws from 2018 to 2023, with a financial allocation of 100 million dirhams—69 million dirhams from the Ministry of Higher Education’s budget and 31 million dirhams as a contribution from the Fes-Meknes region.
It is worth noting that former minister Saeed Amzazi had overseen the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the multi-disciplinary college, along with a student housing complex, laboratories, and sports facilities in the Mazraoua area, located 15 km from the city of Taounate, on an area of 54 hectares, 13,000 square meters of which are covered. However, the project was halted after Abdelatif Miraoui was appointed as Minister of Higher Education.
Students in the Taounate region face significant challenges in continuing their university education, with more than 15,700 students enrolled at Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah University in Fes, half of whom are female. This has led to a high dropout rate, particularly among female students, due to difficult social conditions.
