In a satirical reaction to US President Donald Trump’s desire to “acquire” Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, an online petition has emerged calling for Denmark to buy the US state of California, garnering over 200,000 signatures by Wednesday.
The petition, mimicking the US President’s slogan “Make America Great Again,” calls for “Måke Califørnia Great Ægain” (Make California Great Again in Danish). The website denmarkification.com suggests “buying California from Trump through the most grandiose participatory campaign ever.”
Xavier Dutoit, a Swiss-French individual behind the project, explained to AFP that the idea started “simply to demonstrate how absurd Trump’s claims about Greenland really were.”
As for why California specifically was chosen, the website points to its good weather, its developed technology sector, and the popularity of avocado toast, in addition to Disneyland, which would be renamed “Hans Christian Andersenland,” in reference to the famous Danish storyteller.
The site sarcastically adds: “Mickey Mouse wearing a Viking helmet? Yes, please!” It also mocks the possibility of applying “the rule of law, universal health insurance, and fact-based policies” in California if it became part of Denmark.
It is worth mentioning that Trump has been repeating his desire since late December to annex the vast Arctic island of Greenland, but the island’s leaders, with the support of the Danish government, affirm that it is not for sale.
The denmarkification.com website believes that “Trump might sell” California, adding: “Let’s be honest, Trump isn’t exactly California’s biggest fan… As for the will of the citizens? Well, let’s be realistic – when has he ever stopped at that before?”
As of 3:30 PM (2:30 PM GMT) on Wednesday, 216,000 people had signed the petition, which aims to reach half a million signatures. Dutoit said: “My offer to President Trump is: let him stop this new colonial madness and I will end the campaign.”
In the past 24 hours, the website’s visitors have mainly been Americans, Danes, and Dutch.
It should be noted that Greenland will hold local elections on March 11. The Greenlandic Parliament, which expressed concern about the possibility of foreign interference, voted on Tuesday, February 4, for a law banning anonymous or foreign donations to political parties.
