For the sixth year. Drought threatens Moroccan agriculture amid fears of a severe crisis

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forestry, Ahmed El Bouari, confirmed that the current agricultural season witnessed poor rainfall compared to the national average recorded over the last 30 years, which affected agricultural activity in various regions of the Kingdom.

During his presentation to the Council of Government on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Bouari explained that the ministry has taken a series of measures to support and accompany farmers under these conditions, noting the allocation of about 13 million quintals of selected seeds for autumn cereals, in addition to subsidizing nitrogen fertilizers by nearly 200,000 tons, in a move aimed at enhancing productivity and mitigating the repercussions of the drought.

The minister also revealed a comprehensive program to support the livestock production sector, including the provision of subsidized feed for breeders, as well as technical supervision to improve productivity and animal health. He added that solidarity farming oriented towards livestock breeding will receive special support, with a focus on preserving females to ensure the reconstitution of the national herd.

This program is part of the ministry’s efforts to ensure the sustainability of agricultural activity and mitigate the effects of climate change on the sector, in light of the challenges of scarcity of water resources and their effects on agricultural production.
