Minister of Interior Announces Strategic Steps to Overhaul Urban Transport Sector in Morocco

In the oral question session held on Tuesday at the House of Councillors, Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, drew attention with his announcement of significant steps aimed at developing the urban transport sector in Morocco. Speaking during discussions about the challenges facing urban transport in major cities, the minister emphasized the need to find innovative and effective solutions, stating that the government is taking strategic measures to achieve a qualitative leap in this field.

At the start of his speech, Laftit highlighted the problems plaguing the urban transport sector, particularly the deteriorating state of buses, which have become a major challenge in several Moroccan cities. He explained that the ministry had identified the key issues affecting the sector and indicated that the government plans to make a fundamental transformation in how urban transport is managed and organized.

The minister confirmed that the government is taking an important step by completely separating the state’s investment in purchasing buses from the operation of the sector. He said: “The state will take responsibility for purchasing modern, high-quality buses, while the operation will be entrusted to qualified companies through partnerships with local authorities.”

Laftit also mentioned that the ministry had launched several in-depth studies on urban transport in cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Fez, and Marrakesh. These studies focus on analyzing the shortcomings of the current system and aim to identify the best ways to improve transport by adopting modern and smart technologies.

Regarding upcoming projects, the Minister confirmed that several major projects are underway in major cities, including Rabat, Casablanca, and Agadir. He noted that the ministry will invest nearly 11 billion dirhams in the development of the urban transport fleet, with a focus on purchasing 3,746 new buses. These buses will meet high-quality standards, which will significantly enhance the service provided to citizens.

Laftit emphasized that the government aims for this initiative to be part of a comprehensive plan to improve urban transport across the kingdom by 2030. He indicated that Moroccan cities will undergo a major transformation in transportation infrastructure in the coming years.

In conclusion, Laftit reaffirmed that the ministry will continue to coordinate with local authorities and private sector partners to achieve these ambitious goals, stressing the importance of effective partnerships among all parties to ensure the success of this pivotal transformation in the urban transport sector.
