Morocco Under High Alert for New Year’s Eve

Moroccan authorities are gearing up for the arrival of 2024 with intensified security measures across the kingdom, especially in cities expected to see large crowds during New Year’s celebrations. These measures aim to ensure the safety of citizens and visitors and secure the festivities under the best possible conditions.

According to informed sources, a large number of security checkpoints will be deployed at city entrances and exits to monitor suspicious vehicles and verify the identity of certain drivers. Mobile checkpoints will also be set up in main city squares. Concurrently, police patrols will be reinforced and will tour various streets and neighborhoods of the kingdom to maintain public safety, prevent criminal acts, and create an atmosphere of security and tranquility.

The enhanced security measures include:

  • Use of license plate recognition cameras and X-ray scanning devices to enhance monitoring of all vehicles entering cities.
  • Deployment of plainclothes security personnel in public places, hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, and tourist sites to ensure an effective and unobtrusive security presence.
  • Intensification of mobile police patrols in streets and alleys, in addition to the use of motorcycles to access narrow passages.

In Tangier alone, nearly 2,500 personnel from national security forces and general forces have been mobilized to secure New Year’s Eve. In other cities such as Casablanca, Agadir, and Marrakech, security measures have been significantly reinforced, especially in tourist areas, beaches, and public spaces.

These stringent security measures come as part of Morocco’s ongoing strategy to combat terrorism and crime, which relies on prevention, deterrence, and suppression. Morocco has succeeded in dismantling numerous terrorist cells and enhancing its security cooperation with regional and international partners.

With these intensive security measures, Morocco is preparing to welcome the new year in an atmosphere of enhanced security and reassurance, while maintaining high vigilance to face any potential threats.
