Taxi Drivers in Casablanca Protest in Solidarity with Accused Colleague

Taxi drivers in Casablanca have decided to organize a protest on Thursday, December 12, in front of the Court of Appeal in Ain Sebaa, coinciding with the trial of their colleague accused of assaulting a Russian diplomat and his wife.

This protest, called for by several professional unions, comes to denounce the arrest of the aforementioned taxi driver. These unions point fingers at the Ministry of Interior, considering it responsible for the state of chaos prevailing in the taxi sector.

Authorities had previously detained the taxi driver in Ain Sebaa prison in Casablanca, after he was accused of assaulting a private taxi driver. According to a reliable source, the victim was transporting a Russian diplomat and his wife when the incident occurred in front of one of the city’s hotels. The couple was also subjected to assault, forcibly held inside the car, and threatened.

Upon the arrival of the police, the Russian citizens did not hesitate to file a complaint against the accused and subsequently refused to withdraw it despite the intervention of several professionals in the sector. The investigating judge at the Court of Appeal in Ain Sebaa decided to pursue the accused in detention. Two other taxi drivers involved in this case will be prosecuted while remaining free.

This event highlights the existing tensions in the transportation sector in Casablanca, especially between traditional taxi drivers and private taxi drivers. The upcoming trial session is expected to reveal more details about this case, which has sparked widespread controversy among professionals and the public opinion.
