Serious Accident Injures Sanitation Workers in Agourai Due to Negligence and Lack of Safety Standards

A tragic incident occurred in the commune of Agourai, part of the Hajeb province, resulting in two sanitation workers being rushed in critical condition to the emergency department of the Hajeb Regional Hospital. The accident happened while the workers were performing maintenance and cleaning tasks in a sewage canal, where they suffered severe asphyxiation after inhaling large amounts of toxic carbon monoxide gas.

In a disturbing development, a union source revealed that the company managing the sanitation sector in Agourai commune deliberately assigns its workers tasks outside their original scope of work, which is primarily household waste collection. The source added that the company forces workers to carry out maintenance and cleaning of sewage pits without providing even the most basic safety conditions necessary to protect their lives.

This incident raises serious questions about the extent to which sanitation service companies adhere to occupational safety standards and workers’ rights. It also highlights the need for stricter monitoring of these companies and enforcing their compliance with laws and regulations related to worker safety.

Human rights activists and union representatives have called on the relevant authorities to launch an urgent investigation into the incident and hold those responsible for endangering workers’ lives accountable. They also demanded the provision of appropriate training and necessary protective equipment for sanitation workers, especially those dealing with hazardous tasks such as sewage system maintenance.

It is worth noting that this incident comes amid growing concerns about working conditions in Morocco’s sanitation sector, calling for urgent measures to ensure workers’ safety and rights.
