Algerian Migrants Reach Ceuta by Swimming Despite Heightened Security Measures in Fnideq

In a notable development, a group of Algerian migrants managed to reach the occupied city of Ceuta by swimming, despite the stringent security measures implemented by Moroccan authorities in the neighboring city of Fnideq.

Local newspaper “El Faro de Ceuta” reported that approximately 20 migrants, all from Algeria, arrived in Ceuta by swimming between Sunday and Monday. Ten of them were rescued by the Spanish Civil Guard on Sunday, while six others arrived in the last few hours.

The Spanish news agency stated that the migrants who reached Sarchal beach in Ceuta, including at least three minors, were wearing wetsuits, while two others were in swimwear.

This incident occurs at a time when there were fears of a repeat of the September 15 scenario, which saw calls for mass migration.

Cristina Pérez, the government delegate in Ceuta, told reporters, “Despite the warning about the possibility of a massive entry of migrants on September 30, which was promoted through social media, everything is under control thanks to the presence of a sufficient number of various security forces.”

Pérez added, “Security forces and agencies are prepared, and reinforcements have arrived. For security reasons, I cannot be more specific, but they are ready to deal with any incident in the area, whether at sea or elsewhere.”

The spokesperson also praised the full cooperation from Morocco, as was the case on September 15, calling for “repeating the scenario of close relations in case of a new mobilization of migrants seeking to reach Ceuta.”

It’s worth noting that these incidents occur in the context of ongoing tensions surrounding the issue of irregular migration in the region, highlighting the challenges faced by authorities in both Morocco and Spain in dealing with this phenomenon.
