Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad announced on Monday that Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon have resulted in 274 deaths, including 21 children, marking the highest toll in nearly a year of confrontations between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah. The attacks have also led to the displacement of thousands of families.
In a press conference, the minister stated that “at this stage, the death toll has reached 274, including 21 children and 29 women,” adding that “thousands of families from the targeted areas have been displaced.”
Abiad noted that among the dead were two relief workers, while 16 health sector workers were injured. He added that “two ambulances, a fire truck, and a health center were targeted.”
The minister reported that Monday’s raids also resulted in more than 1,000 injuries, who were treated in 27 hospitals. He further stated that nearly 5,000 people have been injured “in less than a week” due to Israeli attacks, explaining that this figure includes victims of explosions of Hezbollah transmission devices – attributed to Israel – as well as an Israeli strike on Beirut’s southern suburb on Friday.
Abiad pointed out that this number of injuries represents about half the number of those wounded in the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, which left between “10,000 and 11,000 injured.”
This dangerous escalation raises fears of a potential widening of the conflict in the region, calling for urgent action from the international community to halt the escalation and protect civilians.
