Official sources reported that the Moroccan Royal Navy Coast Guard intercepted a traditional fishing boat (pirogue) on Friday carrying 168 migrants from sub-Saharan African countries. The migrants were on their way to illegally immigrate to the Spanish Canary Islands.
According to a statement issued by the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, among the rescued migrants were 6 women and 8 minors. The boat was intercepted off the coast of Dakhla city in southern Morocco.
The statement added that all rescued individuals were in good health and were transported to the port of Dakhla, where they received necessary medical care. Afterward, they were handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie to complete the usual administrative procedures in such cases.
This operation comes as part of the ongoing efforts by the Kingdom of Morocco to combat illegal immigration and human trafficking networks while ensuring the safety of migrants and protecting them from the risks associated with irregular migration journeys.
The rescue operation highlights Morocco’s commitment to addressing the challenges of illegal migration in the region, balancing humanitarian concerns with border security measures.
