The Moroccan capital, Rabat, has announced a new step in improving urban transport with the launch of studies for a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. This ambitious project, overseen by the local development company “Rabat Region Mobility,” aims to create a 45-kilometer bus network covering strategic areas in the city.
This project comes as an efficient and flexible alternative to the existing tram network, aiming to meet the growing transportation needs in the region. The company recently issued a call for tenders to begin the necessary studies for project implementation.
The project aligns with the Interior Ministry’s new vision for urban transport, which focuses on developing BRT systems to enhance public transport services. It is also driven by upcoming major sporting events, such as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup.
The plan includes several key routes, including:
- Connecting Madinat Al Irfane to Hay Riad
- A line in the city of Temara
- Extension of Line L2 from Yacoub El Mansour to Madinat Al Irfane
- Extension of Line L2 from El Kariat to Sala Al Jadida and Technopolis
- Service to the Rabat-Agdal high-speed train station
The BRT system aims to provide a service quality comparable to the tram while meeting the needs of bus and taxi users. With the region’s population expected to reach 2.75 million by 2030, this growth is anticipated to generate over 7.5 million daily trips across all modes of transport.
Currently, the Rabat-Salé tram network extends over 26.9 km, operating on two lines with 41 double trains. The first phase was inaugurated in May 2011, while the second phase became operational in February 2022.
This BRT project represents a major step towards improving urban mobility in the Rabat-Salé-Temara area, enhancing accessibility and offering a viable alternative to the tram, while supporting the region’s urban and demographic development.
