Customs sources reported that customs and police officers at the Bab Sebta border crossing successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle 22 kilograms of chira (cannabis resin) on Saturday evening.
The same sources explained that the quantity of drugs was carefully hidden in a secret compartment prepared in place of the spare tire of a car bearing Moroccan registration plates. The vehicle was driven by a Moroccan citizen residing abroad, holding a French passport.
The sources indicated that the suspect has been handed over to the local police and will later be transferred to the judicial police to complete the investigations, under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.
This operation comes as part of the continuous efforts made by Moroccan authorities to combat drug smuggling across border crossings, and reflects the vigilance and efficiency of the security agencies in detecting and foiling such attempts.
It is worth noting that the Bab Sebta crossing is one of the most important transit points between Morocco and Spain, experiencing heavy traffic of travelers and goods, which makes it a potential target for smuggling attempts.
The successful interception of this significant quantity of drugs underscores the ongoing challenges faced by border control authorities and highlights the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation between different security agencies. This incident also raises questions about the sophisticated methods employed by drug traffickers and the need for advanced detection techniques at border crossings.
As investigations continue, this case may provide valuable insights into broader drug trafficking networks operating in the region, potentially leading to further law enforcement actions in the future.
