Parliamentarian Reem Shoebat of the Democratic Forces Front (FFDF) party harshly criticized the Moroccan government during a session of oral questions in the House of Representatives on Monday evening, due to the “unreasonable” conditions imposed to benefit from the direct financial support program.
Shoebat questioned the fate of many poor families, especially widows and the elderly, who were excluded from this “life-saving” program due to the requirement to live alone, considering that this represents a clear exclusion of these vulnerable groups from their right to benefit from support.
The parliamentarian criticized the government’s reliance on “illogical” criteria to determine beneficiaries, such as the existence of a phone balance or a subscription to basic services such as electricity and water, as proof of not needing the subsidy, arguing that this “costs the citizen a double effort to obtain his right.”
Shoebat also criticized the policy of stopping support for some families two or three months after they start benefiting, because they exceeded the specified indicator ceiling, saying that this “contradicts the principle of alleviating poverty and improving the conditions of needy families.”
For her part, Minister of Economy and Finance Nadia Fattah Alaoui defended the direct subsidy program, stressing that it is a “huge project” that benefits millions of Moroccans. She explained that as of July 8, 4.6 million applications to benefit from the subsidy had been registered, and that more than 3 million citizens are benefiting from the program with an acceptance rate of 82%.
