El Hajeb – Local community representatives and agricultural stakeholders in El Hajeb Province said that the heatwave affecting the area in recent weeks, combined with limited irrigation water availability in some areas, has begun to affect onion cultivation, as farmers await the harvesting and marketing period expected next September.
According to information provided by these representatives, a number of producers have recorded varying levels of crop damage between farms and agricultural areas, amid continued high temperatures during a sensitive stage of the agricultural cycle.
Local representatives believe that rising temperatures are among the main factors affecting onion yields, particularly when combined with difficulties in securing irrigation water. They noted that the impact of these conditions varies from one farm to another depending on water resources, the type of crops, and production conditions.
This situation comes just before farmers enter the harvesting stage, followed by marketing, making crop quality and storage capacity among the main concerns raised by producers, according to the same sources.
Local representatives also highlighted that rising production costs, combined with potential damage caused by heat and water shortages, could increase pressure on farmers, particularly if selling prices are insufficient to cover expenses and compensate for losses recorded during the season.
The same representatives are calling for closer monitoring of the agricultural situation in the province and for the impact of heat and water stress on crops to be assessed, while also providing farmers with the necessary information on irrigation water management and crop protection during periods of exceptionally high temperatures.
The final extent of the damage will depend on the results of the harvest. According to the available information, it would be premature to determine the overall losses affecting the onion crop in the province before the end of the season and a field assessment of yields across the different producing areas.
