Work Begins on the Taounate Road Crossing… A Major Project Amid Development Goals and Implementation Concerns

April 20, 2026, Taounate

Work has begun in recent days on the first phase of the project to develop and upgrade the road network in the city of Taounate, stretching from the southern entrance to the city center, as part of a program aimed at strengthening infrastructure and improving mobility in the regional capital.

According to information shared by local stakeholders, this project is expected to help alleviate traffic congestion and revitalize the urban landscape, particularly since a total budget of over 175 million dirhams has been allocated for it, with more than 111 million dirhams earmarked for the first phase.

This road axis extends over a distance of approximately 3 kilometers, with a width exceeding 17 meters, and includes expansion and reinforcement works, sidewalk improvements, stormwater drainage, public lighting, and the creation of green spaces and parking lots, in addition to the rehabilitation of infrastructure-related networks.

However, the start of construction has reignited, according to the same sources, a local debate regarding the project’s compliance with various legal and technical regulations and ensuring its implementation in accordance with applicable standards, particularly given precedents of projects that experienced setbacks or irregularities during construction or after completion.

The same sources note that the project had previously experienced repeated delays before its relaunch in December 2025, making the monitoring of its current implementation phases a matter of concern, whether in terms of quality, completion deadlines, or compliance with the specifications.

Furthermore, the second phase of the project remains under study, raising additional questions about the overall vision for this project and its integration with the city’s other urban development components.

The project aims to improve road safety and facilitate traffic flow, given Taounate’s location on National Highway 8; however, local stakeholders emphasize that achieving these goals depends on proper implementation, compliance with legal regulations, and ensuring technical oversight throughout the various stages of construction.
