Serious Escalation in Taounate Protests: Slogan “The Governor Does Nothing” Shakes Tissa

In the most severe escalation of its kind, the protests that took place in the town of Tissa, Taounate province, on the evening of Saturday witnessed a radical shift in demands, with protesters loudly chanting a direct slogan calling for the dismissal of the provincial governor: “Nothing has been done… the governor should leave.”

This slogan, voiced defiantly by the protesters in challenge to the authorities, marks a turning point in the ongoing movement in the province, shifting the protests from developmental and social demands to direct political accountability of the highest territorial administration authority in the province. According to observers, this development reflects unprecedented levels of popular frustration and anger, along with a loss of confidence in the governor’s ability to find solutions to the accumulated problems.

The escalation occurred during a protest stand that defied the official ban and was met by local authorities with heavy security cordons, accusations of “repression,” and barring journalists from covering the event.

Raising this slogan culminates a series of protest actions in the province, starting from the Bouarous march to accusations related to “associative rent-seeking,” indicating that protesters have reached the conviction that their developmental and social issues are directly linked to what they describe as the “neglect” and failure of officials to provide real solutions to their suffering.
