The Moroccan Association for Human Rights in Taza expressed deep concern and condemnation over the rising number of victims bitten by stray dogs in the city. Preliminary data indicate that more than forty cases have been recorded in recent days alone. This alarming increase clearly reflects the worsening crisis of stray dog proliferation and its serious implications for the safety of citizens.
This crisis comes amid growing public anxiety due to repeated incidents caused by these dogs, which have become a direct threat to the lives of Taza’s residents, especially children and the elderly who are most vulnerable. The association emphasizes the urgent need for intervention by the competent authorities to address this phenomenon, which negatively affects citizens’ fundamental rights to security and health safety.
In this context, the importance of the recent directive issued by the Ministry of Interior, which prohibits killing street animals, becomes evident as part of state efforts to improve the conditions of stray animals humanely and achieve a balance between animal rights and human rights. The association calls for the directive to be implemented with wisdom and professionalism through adopting alternative strategies to manage the issue of stray dogs, including sterilization, safe containment, and community awareness campaigns, instead of resorting to violence, which may lead to unintended negative consequences.
The association also urges local authorities and civil partners to develop a comprehensive plan to address this issue, based on understanding and cooperation among all stakeholders, with the goal of protecting citizens’ safety and ensuring the enforcement of laws that respect both human and animal rights. The association reaffirms that protecting lives and the safety of citizens is a top priority that cannot be overlooked under any circumstances.
