Recently, media outlets in Fez circulated an audio recording attributed to one of the lifeguards in the city, exposing what he described as poor treatment and deception by officials who had promised these deserving workers their rightful dues but have yet to fulfill those promises. The lifeguard team consists of nine members, four of whom work at Marja Pool and five at Hassan II Pool.
According to the recording, officials appointed as members of Fez’s municipal council had promised each lifeguard four lifeguard cards as compensation for their work throughout the summer. However, the surprising development came when their first payroll was directed to “Fes 1,” the company entrusted with managing the cleaning sector, which refused to recognize them as its employees, stating that it only pays for work performed and would not honor the earlier commitments.
Because the lifeguards refused to join the aforementioned company, they returned to the municipal officials, who provided them with a temporary patchwork solution by paying each 500 dirhams. This payment was delivered through a deputy mayor, accompanied by a promise to complete payments for the first lifeguard card, which had been issued with a 150-dirham shortfall. Up until Monday, September 15, 2025, these lifeguards had not received their dues for the second card, resulting in severe financial hardship affecting their daily lives.
In a phone interview, one lifeguard confirmed receiving a direct call from a deputy mayor responsible for one of the pools, who told him to wait and not publicize the matter, saying verbatim: “Pay us or we will be forced to go to the media.” The lifeguard responded: “Go to the media; there is nothing you can do now. Be patient; if you can’t, then wait.”
This incident highlights a serious crisis faced by the lifeguards in Fez, who are simply demanding their financial rights and fulfillment of promised commitments, in defense of their dignity and right to decent work.
