Official Proposal to Stop Planting Palm Trees and Replace Them with Shade Trees in the City of Fes

Noura El Lahia and Mohcine Azmi Hosni, members of the Fes Municipal Council representing the Social Democratic Movement party, submitted an official proposal to the President of the Fes Municipal Council requesting the addition of a new agenda item for the regular session of October 2025.

The proposal calls for refraining from planting palm trees within the municipal territory and instead replacing them with shade and ornamental trees suitable for the urban environment and local ecosystem.

The proposers emphasized that this approach aims to enhance the city’s vegetation cover in harmony with the characteristics of the local climate, especially given the noticeable rise in temperatures in recent years. Palm trees have become unable to provide adequate shade within neighborhoods, while the residents urgently need leafy shade trees capable of improving living conditions and mitigating the effects of the high heat.

The proposal also stressed the importance of integrating shade trees due to their positive environmental impacts, in addition to their role in enhancing the urban landscape and adding aesthetic value to public spaces.

This topic is expected to receive broad discussion during the upcoming October session, amid growing calls to revise local tree-planting policies in line with environmental challenges and daily needs of the population.
