Baku: Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, President of the Foundation for the Safeguarding of Rabat’s Cultural Heritage, accompanied by Mrs. Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, and Mrs. Arzu Aliyeva, Director of the Baku Media Center, inaugurated the digital exhibition “The Rabat Carpet, a Weave of Arts” today, Tuesday, at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum in Baku.
This innovative exhibition celebrates a venerable art form considered one of the most iconic symbols of the Kingdom of Morocco, offering a unique interactive experience that blends physical displays with immersive digital technologies. The exhibition, a partnership between the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, the Maison de l’Artisan (House of the Artisan), and the National Museum Foundation of Morocco, aims to preserve this traditional heritage and transmit it to new generations, thereby strengthening Rabat’s position as a cultural and creative capital.
The exhibition sheds light on the history and origins of the Rabat carpet, the meticulous techniques used in its creation, and the pivotal role of female artisans in preserving and passing down this authentic art form. It also features photographs, scholarly texts, and graphic illustrations that enrich the visitor’s experience and deepen their understanding of this artistic work.
Upon her arrival at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa was welcomed by Mrs. Leyla Aliyeva and Mrs. Arzu Aliyeva, as well as the Azerbaijani Minister of Culture, Mr. Adil Karimli; the Moroccan Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mr. Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid; the Ambassador of His Majesty the King to Baku, Mr. Mohamed Adil Embarsh; the Secretary General of the Foundation for the Safeguarding of Rabat’s Cultural Heritage, Mrs. Nezha Alaoui; the General Director of the Maison de l’Artisan, Mr. Tarik Sadiq; and the Director of the Museum, Mrs. Amina Malikova.
On this occasion, Mrs. Malikova delivered a speech expressing her delight in hosting Her Royal Highness and inaugurating this exceptional exhibition dedicated to the art of carpet weaving, which celebrates its high symbolic value and the shared cultural heritage between Morocco and Azerbaijan. She also emphasized the importance of this remarkable initiative in highlighting the many similarities between the carpet traditions of the two countries.
The ceremony featured the screening of an animated film titled “The Magical Tale of Pari Khanum,” highlighting the significance of carpets in Azerbaijani culture, and a musical piece titled “Weaving with Love.”
Her Royal Highness and the accompanying delegation also received explanations about the work of the Foundation for the Safeguarding of Rabat’s Cultural Heritage and the Moroccan capital’s role as a crossroads of cultures, as well as the history, origins, evolution over the centuries, and various stages of the Rabat carpet’s creation.
Subsequently, Princess Lalla Hasnaa visited the exhibition dedicated to Azerbaijani carpet weavers, which showcases the history of the country’s carpets, weaving tools, the role of women in preserving this ancient heritage, and its evolution over time. She also viewed artistic displays, paintings, and animated films inspired by Azerbaijani carpet art.
At the end of the visit, Her Royal Highness received explanations about five new types of carpets produced within the framework of the “Revival of Azerbaijani Carpet Weaving Art: Authenticity and Innovation” project, before presiding over the traditional Azerbaijani carpet-cutting ceremony of the newly woven “Nakhshi Jahan” carpet, produced in the museum’s traditional technologies department, as a symbolic gesture marking the birth of a new carpet.
Princess Lalla Hasnaa concluded her visit with a tour of the permanent exhibition of the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum and signed the museum’s Golden Book.
The digital exhibition “The Rabat Carpet, a Weave of Arts,” stemming from the innovative vision of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, embodies a strong ambition to rethink the methods of transmitting intangible heritage through the use of technological innovation, cultural mediation, and sustainable development dynamics.
