The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, has affirmed the existence of a “real opportunity” to advance toward a lasting political solution to the dispute, pointing to emerging positive momentum within the UN-led process in recent months.

This statement came during a briefing before the United Nations Security Council, where he noted that recent consultations have helped deepen discussions on the contours of a political solution aligned with United Nations resolutions, which call for a realistic, practical, and sustainable settlement.

According to available information, the UN official welcomed Morocco’s autonomy initiative, particularly following the submission of a more detailed version, considering it consistent with previous UN recommendations and in line with the approach adopted by the Security Council on this issue.

De Mistura also pointed out that successive Security Council resolutions have described the autonomy initiative as “serious and credible,” viewing it as a realistic basis for reaching a final political solution to the regional dispute.

He further highlighted Morocco’s continued commitment to engaging in the political process under UN auspices, expressing hope for organizing a new round of consultations between the concerned parties before next October.

The envoy added that the coming phase may involve working toward a framework agreement, defining mechanisms for endorsement, and developing a practical roadmap for implementing the solution during a transitional period to ensure its sustainability.

This development comes amid growing international momentum surrounding the issue, particularly following recent UN Security Council resolutions emphasizing the centrality of the autonomy initiative as the most realistic option for resolving the dispute.
