The High Commission for Planning reported that the household confidence index in Morocco showed a marked improvement during the first quarter of 2026, despite the continuing atmosphere of caution and pessimism linked to the economic and social situation.

According to the agency’s latest report, the household confidence index stood at 64.4 points, compared to 57.6 points in the previous quarter and 46.6 points during the same period last year, reflecting a relative improvement in households’ view of the economic situation, though existing concerns remain. The data indicates that the majority of households still perceive a decline in their standard of living, with 75.1% reporting a deterioration over the past 12 months, compared to only 5.8% who reported an improvement, reflecting continued pressure on purchasing power.

As for future expectations, they remain cautious, with 45.1% of households expecting a further decline in their standard of living over the coming year, compared to only 16.4% who anticipate an improvement.

In the labor market, expectations remain negative, with 57.9% of households expecting the unemployment rate to rise, despite this indicator showing a relative improvement compared to previous periods.

Regarding consumption, 66.9% of households believe that current conditions are not suitable for purchasing durable goods, an indicator reflecting continued caution in spending, despite a slight improvement in this area.

As for the financial situation, the data is mixed: about 60% of households reported that their income covers their expenses, while 37.5% resort to borrowing or drawing from their savings, with a relative improvement in future expectations regarding the financial situation.

Conversely, the ability to save remains weak, as only 12.1% of households expect to save in the coming months, reflecting continued pressure on household budgets.

Food prices remain a top concern for households, with 93.3% reporting price increases over the past year, while about 79% expect these increases to continue in the near term.

According to the same source, this development reflects a relative improvement in indicators, despite ongoing challenges related to purchasing power, the job market, and rising prices, which means that household confidence is improving cautiously without leaving the realm of concern.
