Abdelilah Benkirane, the secretary-general of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), opened the party’s 9th national conference with a sharp speech in which he delivered strong criticisms of Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch’s government, warning against the continued reliance on financial transactions and deals in governance.
At the start of his speech, Benkirane emphasized the need for the government to reassess its approach to handling economic and social issues. He stated, “I tell this government, especially the Prime Minister, if you want a future, you must change your approach. Money can only bring you thieves.”
He continued by stressing that money does not guarantee success and may even lead to legal scandals and corruption. “How many of them are now in court, and perhaps in prison, and others?” he remarked.
Benkirane called for a return to basic principles in policy development and government organization, asserting that political success does not come through personal or material gain but through loyalty to the country and its values. He added, “You must rebuild your things on solid ground, if you don’t want to.”
The PJD leader also highlighted the party’s openness to political diversity, provided everyone acts in good faith for the public good. “We have no problem with having liberals, socialists, communists, or Islamists, as long as it’s within the framework of the nation,” he said.
In his view on political leadership, Benkirane emphasized the importance of choosing leaders based on their integrity and sincerity in serving the nation, warning against repeating past mistakes. “It’s impossible, Mr. Aziz, to bring in people just to benefit themselves,” he warned.
Benkirane concluded his speech by reminding the audience of the importance of teamwork and the high principles that should guide political work, quoting King Mohammed VI’s directives on maintaining justice and human development.
Benkirane’s address was essentially a call for the government to reconsider many of its policies and orientations, with an emphasis on putting the country and the public interest above all else.
