Rabat – February 19, 2025: The Moroccan Network for the Defense of the Right to Health and Life has launched a campaign to stop the loss of innocent lives due to road accidents in Morocco. This initiative comes in the context of raising awareness about the importance of securing the right to life through the provision of emergency medical systems and urgent care.
Ali Lotfi, the president of the network, emphasized that “the human right to life is one of the highest human rights and the most important, affirmed in divine laws and constitutions, including Article 20 of the Moroccan Constitution.” He pointed out that road accidents are a serious phenomenon, annually claiming thousands of innocent lives, with over 3,000 deaths recorded each year, making it one of the leading causes of mortality in the country.
Lotfi highlighted that these accidents leave extensive psychological, social, and economic impacts, in addition to tens of thousands of injuries and disabilities. He also noted the recent increase in road accident rates, exacerbating human, social, and economic losses, thus weakening road safety.
In this context, a serious road accident occurred this morning in the Ait Amira commune in the Chtouka Ait Baha region, where a vehicle carrying agricultural workers to the fields overturned, resulting in injuries of varying severity. Another tragic incident occurred near Taounate, where students fell from a school bus, and they were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Lotfi explained that the main causes of these accidents include dangerous driving behaviors such as excessive speed and using mobile phones while driving, alongside infrastructure deficiencies like poor road conditions and lack of maintenance, and heavy traffic in major cities.
He also pointed out that the absence of an effective emergency health system like SAMU, and the inadequacy of emergency services, contribute to the human toll. Lotfi called on the government to adopt a comprehensive approach that includes improving infrastructure, enhancing training and public awareness, and developing emergency health systems.
Lotfi concluded his statement by urging solidarity among all sectors of society and relevant entities to achieve a radical change in the National Road Safety Agency, strict enforcement of traffic laws, and increasing surveillance to ensure the safety of everyone on the roads.
