In celebration of World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10, Morocco has launched a national awareness campaign running from October 10 to 17, 2024.
This campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and to promote investment in this vital area that affects individuals and communities alike.
The campaign consists of two main components: the first is in-person activities, including informational sessions, workshops, and seminars organized in several cities, aimed at fostering direct dialogue between citizens and health professionals.
The second component is digital, focusing on distributing educational content through social media and the digital platforms of the Ministry of Health.
This content will provide information about mental health issues and available support options.
Enhancing mental health is viewed as a shared responsibility that requires the collective efforts of individuals and communities.
In this regard, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection is preparing to launch the “Multisectoral Strategic Plan for Mental Health 2030,” developed in collaboration with various stakeholders, including those who have experienced mental health disorders.
In terms of available services, the Moroccan healthcare system includes 11 psychiatric hospitals and 34 psychiatric departments within public hospitals, offering a total of 2,260 beds. Additionally, there are four institutions for psychosocial rehabilitation and specialized teams comprising 362 psychiatrists and 1,301 nurses.
These efforts resulted in providing care for 250,624 patients in 2023, reflecting Morocco’s commitment to improving the quality of mental health services.
Statistics indicate that over 17% of the Moroccan population suffers from mental health issues, which are the leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of morbidity nationally.
This situation necessitates intensified efforts to ensure that all individuals receive the necessary care and support.
World Mental Health Day serves as an opportunity to highlight the importance of this issue and calls on everyone to promote health awareness and support those affected, thereby enhancing psychological well-being in Moroccan society and reflecting its commitment to creating a comprehensive healthy environment for all.
