Moroccan boxer Khadija El Mardi secured her spot in the quarter-finals of the under-75 kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Wednesday. El Mardi emerged victorious in the round of 16, defeating British competitor Chantelle Reid in a close judges’ decision (3-2).
This success follows Tuesday’s achievement by another Moroccan pugilist, Widad Bertal, who advanced to the quarter-finals in the under-54 kg category. Bertal overcame Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong, also winning by a judges’ decision (3-2).
However, their compatriot Yasmine Mouttaki faced elimination in the round of 16 of the under-50 kg category. Mouttaki lost to Philippine boxer Aira Villegas in a unanimous judges’ decision (5-0).
Looking ahead, El Mardi is set to face Australian boxer Caitlin Parker in the quarter-finals on Sunday, August 4. Parker earned her place by defeating Mexican boxer Vanessa Ortiz.
These results highlight the strong performance of Moroccan boxing in this Olympic tournament, with hopes for further success in the upcoming stages of the competition. The Moroccan team’s achievements so far demonstrate their competitive spirit and preparation for the global stage of the Olympics.
