Discussions on the impact of drought and climate change on the agricultural sector in Morocco and achieving food security dominated the activities of the second day of the International Agricultural Exhibition in the city of Meknes.
Experts and stakeholders in the agricultural field participated in these discussions, where they addressed the impact of the climate crisis on crops and its threat to food security in the country.
Participants stressed the need to develop agricultural research to find innovative solutions to meet these challenges, including developing more drought-resistant plant varieties and smart irrigation techniques.
Participants in a seminar on “The Importance of Agricultural Research in the Face of Climate Change” stressed the need to “find flexible and sustainable solutions to mitigate the effects of extreme weather events.”
For his part, Minister of Agriculture, Marine Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, Mohammed Sadiki, stressed that “climate uncertainty affects water and crop availability, in the face of rising global demand for food.”
Sadiki called for “scientific research to reach innovative solutions through the provision of more resistant varieties and improved productivity,” stressing the importance of “providing funding for scientific research.”
The minister pointed out that “funding for scientific research varies between developed and developing countries, where it does not exceed 1% of GDP in Africa, while that percentage reaches 3% in the United States and 2.5% in the European Union.”
