Moroccan Sahara.. Washington takes a clear position: development and cooperation under Moroccan sovereignty

Morocco – U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau affirmed on Friday, September 25, 2026, the United States’ commitment to supporting the development of the Sahara region under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco, following talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In a statement to the press following the meeting, Landau said that the United States had renewed its affirmation of the historic friendship relations between Washington and Rabat, as well as their shared vision regarding the development of the Sahara region and the strengthening of cooperation there under Moroccan sovereignty.

The U.S. official added that his country looked forward to working with Morocco and the other parties concerned to reach a solution to the dispute over the Sahara, noting that this regional dispute has continued for more than five decades.

Landau stressed that the continuation of the status quo, in his words, “cannot continue,” referring to Washington’s position on the need to advance efforts to address this dispute.

In the same context, the U.S. official affirmed the continuation of the friendship between Morocco and the United States, considering that relations between the two countries are currently at a level he described as the best ever.

These statements come within the framework of the diplomatic meetings and consultations held by Morocco and its international partners on the sidelines of the proceedings of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Sahara marocain..
