Meknes: INDH support boosts local cooperatives, but marketing and sustainability challenges remain

Meknes – Morocco’s National Initiative for Human Development (INDH) continues to support cooperatives and project holders in the Meknes prefecture by assisting social and solidarity economy initiatives aimed at improving production capacity, working conditions, and the marketing of local products, thereby contributing to local economic and social development.

Among the beneficiaries is the women’s cooperative Dar Lalla, which specializes in traditional sewing and embroidery in the historic medina of Meknes. The cooperative received financial support worth MAD 20,000, enabling it to purchase sewing and embroidery equipment and improve its workspace, resulting in better product quality and increased production capacity.

Speaking to the Maghreb Arab Press (MAP), cooperative manager Leïla Rahmani said the cooperative brings together five women artisans working to preserve traditional craftsmanship while promoting women’s economic empowerment and their integration into the local economy.

As part of the same initiative, the INDH established the Fath Az-Zahr Market in Meknes, providing a permanent venue where cooperatives operating in the social and solidarity economy can showcase and sell their products, helping them reach a broader customer base.

Another beneficiary is the agricultural cooperative Badia Zerhoun, which has expanded its operations since receiving INDH support in 2019. The funding enabled the cooperative to modernize its production methods, replacing traditional techniques with more advanced equipment. It now produces olive oil, carob products, legumes, and has recently expanded into honey production.

According to cooperative president Mohamed El Yaghmouri, speaking to MAP, permanent marketing spaces and trade exhibitions have helped address some of the challenges associated with selling local products while opening access to wider markets.

Through these initiatives, the INDH seeks to strengthen the competitiveness of local cooperatives, promote regional products, and create sustainable income opportunities in line with Morocco’s local development and social economy objectives.

However, development experts stress that the long-term success of these initiatives will depend on continued post-financing support, including training, marketing assistance, digital transformation, and improved access to national and international markets. They argue that while financial assistance is essential, it must be complemented by ongoing guidance and effective marketing mechanisms to enable cooperatives to become competitive and sustainable economic actors.
