The Court of First Instance in Marrakech, yesterday Thursday, January 22, 2026, sentenced an Algerian football fan holding British nationality, after prosecuting him for tearing Moroccan banknotes inside the stadium stands. The court handed down a prison sentence of eight months to be served, in addition to a fine of 500 Moroccan dirhams.
La Cour de première instance de Marrakech a condamné, hier jeudi 22 janvier 2026, un supporter algérien de nationalité britannique, poursuivi pour avoir déchiré des billets de banque marocains à l’intérieur des gradins du stade. La juridiction a prononcé à son encontre une peine de huit mois de prison ferme, assortie d’une amende de 500 dirhams.

The case dates back to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations, which brought together the Algerian and Nigerian national teams, when a video widely circulated on social media showed the individual tearing Moroccan currency from within the stands of the Grand Stadium of Marrakech. This act was deemed offensive to national symbols, prompting the immediate intervention of the competent authorities.
Les faits remontent aux quarts de finale de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations, opposant les sélections algérienne et nigériane, lorsqu’une vidéo largement diffusée sur les réseaux sociaux a montré l’intéressé en train de déchirer une monnaie nationale marocaine depuis les gradins du Grand Stade de Marrakech. Ce comportement a été considéré comme une atteinte aux symboles nationaux, ce qui a entraîné une intervention immédiate des autorités compétentes.

According to available information, the identity of the individual concerned was established and he was arrested immediately after the video spread. He was then questioned while in police custody under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office. During the investigation, the accused admitted to the acts attributed to him, confirming their deliberate nature, which was presented before the court during the trial hearings.
Selon les informations disponibles, l’identité de la personne concernée a été rapidement établie et celle-ci a été interpellée aussitôt après la diffusion de la vidéo. Elle a ensuite été entendue en garde à vue sous la supervision du parquet compétent. Au cours de l’enquête, l’accusé a reconnu les faits qui lui étaient reprochés, en confirmant le caractère intentionnel de son geste, éléments qui ont été soumis à la cour lors des audiences.

In justifying its ruling, the court referred to the applicable legal provisions criminalizing the deliberate destruction of national currency as an act undermining state symbols, in addition to violating regulations governing spectator conduct inside sports stadiums. This decision comes as a reaffirmation of the need to respect laws and national symbols, particularly during international sporting events hosted by the Kingdom.
Dans la motivation de son jugement, la cour a invoqué les dispositions légales en vigueur qui pénalisent la destruction volontaire de la monnaie nationale en tant qu’atteinte aux symboles de l’État, ainsi que la violation des règles encadrant le comportement des supporters dans les enceintes sportives. Cette décision s’inscrit dans le cadre de la réaffirmation de l’obligation de respecter les lois et les symboles nationaux, notamment lors des manifestations sportives internationales accueillies par le Royaume.
