The Fes–Meknes Region witnessed the recognition of 61 educational institutions as part of the Eco-Schools Program, implemented by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection in partnership with the Ministry of National Education. This step reflects the growing environmental awareness within school environments across the region.
The awards were presented during a regional ceremony held on Thursday at Al-Farfara Primary School, under the provincial directorate of the Ministry of National Education in Moulay Yaacoub. On this occasion, 11 institutions received the Green Flag, 17 institutions were awarded the Silver Certificate, and 33 institutions obtained the Bronze Certificate, in recognition of their commitment to adopting environmentally friendly practices within their school communities.
Institutions awarded the Green Flag were distributed across several provincial directorates, including Fes, Meknes, Ifrane Province, El Hajeb Province, Taza, and Moulay Yaacoub Province, reflecting a gradual and balanced engagement of the region’s different territories in this educational environmental initiative.
In a speech on the occasion, Fouad Arouadi, Director of the Regional Academy of Education and Training of Fes–Meknes, highlighted the pivotal role played by environmental clubs within educational institutions. He described them as practical spaces for instilling sound environmental behaviors among students and for strengthening the school’s connection to sustainability and natural resource protection issues.
He explained that the impact of these initiatives goes beyond school walls to reach families and the broader social environment, as learners transfer values related to water and energy conservation and proper waste management into their daily lives—thus contributing to the spread of a collective environmental culture within society.
He also praised the role of teaching staff in supervising environmental clubs and fostering an educational dynamic that enlivens school life and consolidates values of environmental citizenship, stressing that this approach is in line with the national education reform roadmap, which positions school life as a key lever for building students’ personalities.
For her part, Ibtissam Zair, representative of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, explained that the Eco-Schools Program constitutes a practical mechanism for raising awareness among preschool and primary school pupils about the importance of environmental preservation. This is achieved through tangible projects focusing on key areas such as rational use of water and energy and effective waste management.
She noted that more than 1,200 educational institutions nationwide submitted applications during the 2024–2025 school year, emphasizing that schools awarded the Green Flag are required to renew this distinction annually, in line with the principle of sustainability.
The ceremony was marked by artistic performances created by students, an environmental exhibition showcasing products from school clubs, and the honoring of three students from the Fes provincial directorate with the Young Reporters for the Environment award—an initiative encouraging conscious environmental expression among young people.
It is worth recalling that the Eco-Schools Program aims to integrate the principles of sustainable development into daily educational practice and to enable learners and educational stakeholders to implement concrete environmental projects within schools, thereby strengthening the school’s role in building a generation that is aware of environmental issues and its responsibilities toward them.
