New York – : November 5, 2025 – The Democratic Party achieved notable victories in local elections held on Tuesday, with Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani winning the position of Mayor of New York, becoming the first Muslim to hold this position in America’s largest city. Two Democratic candidates also won the governorships of Virginia and New Jersey, giving the party significant momentum ahead of next year’s midterm congressional elections.
Zohran Mamdani Declares Victory and Attacks Trump
Mamdani (34 years old) announced his victory in a victory speech before a crowd of supporters, confirming that he will officially take the constitutional oath in early January. He said amid warm applause: “You have given me a mandate for change and new politics,” pledging to improve conditions in New York City. He also thanked workers of various nationalities and ethnicities.
According to exit polls after the ballot boxes closed, Mamdani led the race with 50.4% of the votes, compared to 41.3% for his Republican opponent Curtis Sliwa, with a margin exceeding 100,000 votes. He also directed sharp criticism at President Donald Trump, saying: “This is not only how we stop Trump, but how we stop ‘the next Trump’.” He added, addressing him: “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching me now, I have 4 words for you: Turn up the volume.” Trump immediately responded via Truth Social: “Let the challenge begin then.”
Democratic Victories in Virginia and New Jersey
In New Jersey, Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill won with 56% compared to 43% for her Republican opponent Jack Ciattarelli, according to preliminary results.
In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger (46 years old), a former Congresswoman and former CIA officer, won with 56.9% compared to 42.9% for her Republican opponent Winsome Earle-Sears. With this victory, Spanberger becomes the first woman to hold the position of state governor in its history, a step that strengthens the moderate Democratic current.
Spanberger’s victory in Virginia, a pivotal state for reading national voting trends, is considered a morale boost for the Democratic Party, especially with the approaching midterm elections.
Reactions and Trump’s Justifications
President Trump justified the Republican loss by the absence of his name on the ballot and the government shutdown. For his part, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer described the results as “a categorical rejection of Trump’s agenda,” pointing to the American people’s rejection of “cruelty, chaos, and greed” in the “Make America Great Again” movement.
Senator Bernie Sanders praised Mamdani’s victory, considering it “one of the biggest political surprises in modern American history.”
