Youth Centers Union in Fes Calls for Reopening Long-Closed Facilities

The Union of Youth Center Councils in Fes sent an official letter to the Governor of the Fes-Meknes region, urging urgent intervention to reopen several youth institutions that have been closed for years despite completion of renovation works.

The letter, numbered 25/35, highlighted the negative impact of these closures on broad segments of society—especially women, children, and youth—amid scarce public spaces and educational and cultural centers in the city. This deprives residents of vital services that contribute to comprehensive and sustainable development.

The union emphasized that their request supports authorities’ efforts to improve social and cultural conditions, reflecting the royal care of King Mohammed VI for the youth and childhood sectors.

Renovated Institutions Still Closed
Among the closed institutions are:

  • The Women’s Club and Tal’a Kindergarten, located in the historic Tal’a Al-Kubra neighborhood within Fes old city. Founded in the 14th century and officially opened in 1954 under the youth and sports sector, it spans 792 square meters.
  • Siyaj Youth Center in the Sidi Ahmed Chaoui neighborhood inside the old city, inaugurated in 1969 covering 356 square meters.

Despite completed renovations, these centers remain closed, though they are vital for hosting educational and cultural activities for women, children, and youth.

Centers Still Used by Ministry of Health Since Pandemic
The letter also noted that some youth centers in Fes are still being used by the Ministry of Health since the COVID-19 pandemic, including:

  • Jinan Alward Youth Center
  • Montazah Al-Salam Youth Center
  • Mabrouka Youth Center

The union called for these facilities to be returned to the youth and sports sector to enable associations and youth actors to resume their activities there.

Urgent Call for Action
The union expressed confidence in the responsiveness of the regional authorities, praising their efforts to improve the city’s conditions and urging the necessary measures to reopen these institutions. This would provide safe, suitable spaces with social, educational, and cultural character for youth, women, and children.

Signed:
Hatim Marada
President, Union of Youth Center Councils
