Theft of Electrical Wires Plagues Fes Districts and Threatens Public Network Stability

The phenomenon of stealing cables and electrical wires has recently intensified across various neighborhoods in the city of Fes, placing a heavy burden on the budgets of the districts under the municipal authority and posing significant security and service challenges that threaten the stability of the energy infrastructure in the scientific capital.

Many streets and alleys in districts such as Agdal, Saiss, and Fes City have witnessed repeated robberies targeting the copper wires of the public lighting network. Organized criminal networks exploit late-night hours to carry out these thefts, leaving entire neighborhoods plunged into darkness, which in turn creates security risks for residents and property.

These thefts not only cause public lighting outages but also impose ongoing financial burdens on district councils, which are forced to repeatedly purchase and reinstall the stolen wires. This drains a significant portion of budgets that were originally intended for other developmental projects benefiting the citizens.

In response to this situation, residents and elected officials have raised their voices, calling on security forces to intensify patrols and campaigns to track down those involved in these networks. They also stress the need for stricter monitoring of scrap metal markets suspected of buying stolen materials, aiming to put an end to this phenomenon that has become a drain on public funds and a direct threat to citizens’ safety and the stability of essential services.
