The city of Al-Hajeb has witnessed several cases of Leptospirosis, a disease known to be primarily transmitted by rodents and rats. The severity of the outbreak necessitated the transfer of the infected individuals to emergency departments in both Al-Hajeb and Meknes to receive essential medical treatment, where they are currently under close health monitoring due to the serious nature of the disease.
According to sources from the newspaper, the main cause of the disease’s spread among some residents of Al-Hajeb stems from the contamination of water in certain springs, which are popular recreational spots for locals and visitors alike. This contamination is linked to the proliferation of rodents in the waterways of these springs, which have become suitable habitats for their settlement and reproduction. This situation persists amid a lack of effective intervention by the health authorities responsible for rodent control and extermination.
In response, the provincial and health authorities in Al-Hajeb have declared a state of heightened alert to contain the outbreak, limit its spread, and safeguard public health, while urging the adoption of necessary preventive measures.
