Health Sector in Fès-Meknès Region Between Two Speeds: A Bitter Reality and a Major Challenge

Fès, September 20, 2025 – The National Health Union at the Regional Office of Fès-Meknès, affiliated with the Democratic Labor Confederation, issued a statement highlighting the health situation in the region. The statement emphasized the significant challenges facing the sector and the future stakes to improve health services for citizens.

The statement described the health sector as experiencing a “bitter reality” due to a shortage of human resources, weak biomedical equipment, accumulation of stalled projects, limited budgets, and insufficient infrastructure against citizens’ needs. It also noted that the Ministry’s field visits revealed only part of the problems, stressing the need to implement the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 15 doctors per 10,000 inhabitants, a figure the region falls far short of, worsening citizens’ difficulties in accessing healthcare.

The union affirmed that the media portrayal of the Ministry’s visits does not reflect the true reality, warning that media shifts cannot solve the sector’s structural problems. It pointed out that the lack of specialized doctors in the provinces complicates medical transport and affects patient treatment in university hospital centers, adding that some measures do not meet the daily needs of citizens.

The statement also called for:

  • Improving the conditions of healthcare workers and addressing their demands to guarantee citizens’ constitutional right to free treatment.
  • Equipping hospitals with ambulances and modern medical devices, along with providing essential medicines and supplies.
  • Fair distribution of human resources and reducing the pressure on medical transport staff.
  • Opening scientific prospects for youth through ongoing and higher education programs in shortage specialties, supported by exemplary hospital projects.
  • Rehabilitating provincial hospitals and underutilized health centers and filling vacant financial positions according to regional justice criteria.

The regional office concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to two solidarity lines: defending the dignity of healthcare workers and citizens’ right to high-quality health services, alongside a pledge to continue all legitimate forms of protest to protect the sector’s demands.
