Gendarmerie Thwarts Smuggling of 5 Tons of “Chira” Between Tiflet and Meknes

Tiflet, Morocco – In a new security achievement, Royal Gendarmerie officers from the Khemisset brigade successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a massive quantity of the drug “chira,” estimated at around 5 tons, yesterday, Thursday.

This significant operation took place on the national highway linking the cities of Tiflet and Meknes. Gendarmerie teams managed to stop a truck being used to smuggle the drugs. A thorough search revealed the large quantity of “chira” carefully hidden inside the vehicle.

The truck driver was immediately arrested and placed in police custody pending further investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office. The aim is to uncover all circumstances of the case and identify any other potential accomplices.

This operation underscores the continuous security vigilance on the kingdom’s main roads. The national highway between Rabat and Meknes has recently seen several drug smuggling attempts foiled. Notably, some of these operations were discovered by chance after road accidents, most prominently the overturning of two drug-laden trucks—one near Meknes and the other in the Sidi Allal Bahraoui area.
