Fez, Morocco – “Fez News” has received complaints from residents of the Atlas district in Fez, who are condemning the noticeable return of the public space encroachment phenomenon, particularly in Moulay Hicham Avenue and Houceima Street. According to residents, pedestrians are forced to walk in the middle of the street, risking their lives, because sidewalks have been occupied by vendors and merchants.
These complaints come shortly after a widespread campaign led by local authorities in Fez to liberate public spaces and remove obstacles that were blocking the way of pedestrians. The goal of that campaign was to restore order to public areas and ensure citizens’ right to use sidewalks.
Those affected indicated that the authorities’ efforts, despite their initial effectiveness, did not prevent the situation from reverting to its previous state. The encroachers reclaimed their spots shortly after the campaign ended, which shows an ongoing challenge to regulatory efforts.
This phenomenon poses a daily threat to the lives of pedestrians, especially women, children, and the elderly, and raises questions about the effectiveness of measures taken to ensure the continuous enforcement of the law. Residents of the Atlas district continue to await a decisive intervention from local authorities to find a permanent solution to this issue that has become a source of great concern.
