Moroccan National Team Qualifies for CHAN Final After Historic Match Against Senegal

Rabat, Morocco – In a thrilling football night, the Moroccan national team secured its place in the final of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) after defeating their Senegalese counterparts 5-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time. The “Atlas Lions” will face a surprising Madagascar team in the final, which pulled off a major upset with its qualification.

The exciting match took place at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, where both teams showcased their offensive capabilities from the very first minutes. Senegal managed to open the scoring in the 16th minute through player Joseph Layousse Samb, giving the “Teranga Lions” the lead.

However, the Moroccan response was swift. Spurred on by the deficit, the Atlas Lions intensified their pressure and were rewarded just seven minutes later. Player Sabir Bougrine scored the equalizer in the 23rd minute, bringing the score level and reigniting the match’s intensity.

The remainder of the game was a fierce tactical battle between the two teams, as defensive organization dominated, limiting scoring opportunities. The tie persisted through both extra-time periods, leading the teams to a penalty shootout.

In the decisive moment, the Moroccan players showed great focus and confidence, successfully converting all of their shots. In contrast, the Senegalese players missed one of their penalties, allowing Morocco to win the encounter and rightfully qualify for the final.

On the other side of the bracket, the Madagascar team qualified for the final after a tough 1-0 victory over Sudan in extra time, in a match held at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar Es Salaam.
